Maui Hawaii

I love my Maui Hawaii vacations because this island has the best balance in terms of beaches, accommodations, activities, beauty and variety.  Plus it has the best sunsets in the world.

Maui has all of the amenities of a larger city but the charm of a small town. Maui is big enough to get away from it all yet small enough to see it all.  From the dry side to the rain forest with thick foliage and plumeria flowers everywhere, Maui has something for everybody.

Things to do

Snorkel with the turtles, ride alongside dozens of whales, climb 10,200 foot Haleakala crater and then glide back down to the northeastern shore and the rainforest of Hana where is rains over 360 inches per year. Swim in tranquil west side ocean waters or take a quick trip over to the north side and surf some great waves. Catch that stunning sunset from the beach in Kaanapali or a sunrise from the top of a volcano.  Paddle board in the calm waters of Kaanapali, Lahaina and Napili.  Visit our Things to do in Maui page for details on the best adventures.

For more information on whale watching, please visit the Pacific Whale Foundation.

Maui prides itself on the year round perfect growing season that takes advantage of plentiful rain and rich volcanic soil.  The better restaurants incorporate locally grown produce and freshly caught seafood into some of the best dishes that you will find anywhere in the world.  Our Maui restaurant page has detailed reviews and pictures of some of my favorite dishes along with the best ones for a romantic sunset dinner.

Resorts and Hotels

The best Maui Hawaii vacations start by selecting the best home resort location. For the first time visitor, your best choice is selecting one of the beautiful Maui resorts. For the returning visitor other options include either purchasing or renting one of the fabulous Maui timeshares. Your choice of location is dependent on several factors such as what type of weather you like and what activities you will be doing.  The best higher end resorts are found in Wailea, Kaanapali and Kapalua. If you like more of a local, less fancy place, then Kihei is the perfect small beach town.

Our Maui beach page has photos and reviews of my favorites beaches.  During my Maui Hawaii vacations, I prefer to stay in Kaanapali due to the abundance of sunshine, calm waters, great snorkeling, proximity to great shopping and restaurants and one of the best beaches on Maui called Kahekili (shown below). However, in general anywhere between Lahaina and Napali is great. My other favorite beach is Kaanapali beach, adjacent to the Sheraton Maui and Black Rock. This side of the island has the calmest water, least amount of wind and small waves making for the best family beach vacations for all ages.

There are no bad times for Maui island vacations. Maui's prime season is everyday. There is no off season. Days are usually in the high 70s to mid 80s all year long with lows in the high 60s and low 70s. The warmest weather, ever so slightly, is in August, September and October. This is also when the water is the warmest, but as compared to most beaches in the mainland, the water in Hawaii is always warm.  Visit our Maui weather page for the 5 day forecast plus monthly average air and ocean temperatures plus details on the best weather locations.

If you want to see the whale migration then you need to visit in January and February. My favorite Maui island vacations are in September and October. This time of the year has the least amount of people visiting, least amount of rain and warmest weather and water.

Maui is about 48 miles long and 26 miles wide at the largest point. This makes it relatively easy to move in and out of micro-climates during your visit. Visit our page on Maui maps for information on the location of restaurants, beaches and resorts.

The main international airport is centrally located in Kahului.  A smaller airport, perfect for island hopping, is in Kapalua and just a few minutes away from the resort towns of Napili and Kaanapali.  If you are traveling to or from another island and staying near Kapalua, this smaller, uncrowded airport is worth considering.
