About Akumal

Akumal Mexico is located about 60 miles south of Cancun and is a small tourist town located right on the Caribbean in the Rivera Maya.  Akumal, in Mayan, means "land of the turtle".  It is between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.  It is best know for great snorkeling, diving, snorkeling and exploring cenotes.  It is much smaller than Cancun and gives the visitor that feeling of being in a small, secluded town as compared to the much more populated and dense Cancun.  If you want a night scene with late night partying and live music, Akumal is not the town for you.  It is quiet and sleepy small town and shuts down early.

Akumal is a great place to stay if you plan on visiting the Coba and Tulum Mayan ruins or the Cancun amusement parks of Xel-ha, Xplor and Xcaret due to its close proximity to these destinations.
